So what sets the guitar playing of Doug Reese apart from the rest of the guitar playing masses? Is it his influences? Not really. A lot of modern day guitarists have influences as varied as Wes Montgomery, Pat Metheny, Larry Carlton, Mike Stern, Steve Morse and Alex Lifeson. Is it his resume? Probably not. Many players have done a stint in a variety cover band, rocked local bars in progressive & alternative rock bands, or felt the power of a raging big band around them. How about the music he's currently playing? Well, possibly. Even though he loves playing standards everyone knows, they never sound quite like you remember. And come to think of it, his own compositions are quite refreshing; familiar yet new and original, especially with the contributions of his current band mates. Then what is it that makes him stand out? You'll have to give him and the rest of the band a listen and decide for yourself. |
